‘Absolute sitter’: Chanel Harris-Tavita’s conversion misses prove costly in Warriors loss to Raiders

The Warriors have missed a golden opportunity to keep their season alive after Chanel Harris-Tavita’s inability to kick conversions led to a 20-18 loss to the Raiders.

With four tries, the Warriors outscored their opposition but only one conversion cost them. Harris-Tavita was forced to kick goals when Adam Pompey and Taine Tuaupiki left with injuries.

Addin Fonua- Blake scored late in the game to make it 20-18, but Harris-Tavita couldn’t convert despite the kick being right next to the posts.

The Raiders were in first when Hudson Young barged over the line after six minutes.

Warriors fullback Tuaupiki then left the field moments later for a head injury assessment, with Roger Tuivasa-Sheck reverting to the back.

Tuaupiki failed to return after his head knock.

After 10 minutes, the Raiders were then up 12-0 with Jamal Fogarty putting Young through a hole to score his second. A penalty goal a few sets later put the Raiders even further ahead.

Eventually right on half time, the Warriors put themselves on the scoreboard when Tuivasa-Sheck stepped his way through the defence.

The first half then started with the Warriors on fire, despite Pompey not returning with a knee injury.

Kurt Capewell fooled Xavier Savage with a dummy to score first before fellow Origin star Mitch Barnett barged over to make it 14-14 after 60 minutes.

With around 10 minutes to go, Marata Niukore gifted the Raiders a penalty with a head high tackle on Jordan Rapana. Niukore was put on report.

Xavier Savage then put the Raiders ahead, finishing off a kick from Kaeo Weekes.

“Look at that, pinpoint … what an incredible kick,” Brad Fittler said on Nine.

The Warriors weren’t finished though, Addin Fonua-Blake was next to score, keeping his side in the hunt.

However, Harris-Tavita’s horror night with the boot meant he missed one from close to the goals with the Raiders leading 20-18 as the game finished at that scoreline.

The Warriors five-eighth left the field immediately after full time and was notably upset in the dressing room.

“He’s disappointed you can see it,” Andrew Johns said as Harris-Tavita walked off the field.
