In a surprising development, Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian has announced his resignation, stepping down from his position effective immediately. This decision comes after a series of significant events in both his personal and professional life over the past year.

Sarkisian’s tenure at Texas saw notable achievements, including back-to-back College Football Playoff appearances and a Big 12 Championship in 2023. In January 2025, he turned down multiple NFL head coaching opportunities, opting instead to sign a contract extension with Texas, demonstrating his commitment to the program’s future.

However, the past year also brought personal challenges. In July 2024, Sarkisian and his wife, Loreal, announced their divorce, citing the demanding nature of their respective careers as a contributing factor. citeturn0search2 Despite a brief reconciliation later that year, the couple ultimately decided to part ways. In April 2025, they welcomed their first child together, a son named Xolo.

Sarkisian’s departure also follows a period of significant staff turnover within the Longhorns’ coaching team. Notably, secondary coach Terry Joseph left to join the New Orleans Saints as the defensive passing game coordinator, marking the third assistant to depart during the offseason.

In his resignation statement, Sarkisian expressed gratitude for his time at Texas and emphasized the need to prioritize his family and personal well-being. He acknowledged the support from fans, players, and staff, and wished the program continued success in the future.

The University of Texas has initiated a search for a new head coach to lead the Longhorns into the upcoming season. Athletic Director Chris Del Conte stated that the university is committed to finding a leader who will build upon the foundation laid by Sarkisian and continue to strive for excellence both on and off the field.

As the Longhorns navigate this transition, the focus remains on maintaining stability within the program and supporting the student-athletes during this period of change.
