St. Louis Cardinals president John Mozeliak addressed the team’s starting pitching plan moving forward in MLB free agency
St. Louis has already brought in Lance Lynn, Kyle Gibson, and Sonny Gray to aid with pitching. After a dismal 2023 season, St. Louis went into the summer with adding pitching as their major aim. John Mozeliak, the president of baseball operations for the Cardinals, recently made a suggestion via Cardinals Live that the organization might try to get even more arms.
“Why close the doors today, even though we like what we have?” stated Mozeliak.
He apparently thinks well of the Cardinals’ current bullpen. Mozeliak went on to discuss the Cardinals’ starting pitching decisions.
“Our rotation is providing innings, and that’s how we want to shorten games,” he said. “Regardless of who is in it, the deeper starters can go, the better our bullpen will be.”
St. Louis is depending on their starters to put up significant amount of innings. If it’s needed, Gibson, Lynn, and Gray can all play very long into games. Maybe going ahead, the Cardinals will prioritize innings-eaters in their quest to get more starting pitchers.
Over the year, though, their starring rotation struggled terribly. After adding players in the offseason, St. Louis’ rotation is already in a lot stronger position than it was at the end of the 23 season. Miles Mikolas is one of the pitching staff members that Gray, Lynn, and Gibson join.
The Cardinals are hopeful that Mikolas, who was an All-Star in 2022, can recover from his disastrous 2023 campaign. Still, the organization’s top priority should be to add at least one more starter.
In 2024, the Cardinals will have an opportunity to bounce back and contend for a postseason trip. The team’s performance going forward will be greatly influenced by their signings, albeit
