SAD NEWS: Former Boise State Broncos Coach Mike Andrews Passes Away at 67

BOISE, ID — The Boise State football community is mourning the loss of one of its most respected and beloved figures. Mike Andrews, former assistant coach and longtime mentor to generations of Broncos players, has passed away at the age of 67 after a brief illness, the university confirmed Saturday morning.

Andrews, who served on the Boise State coaching staff from 1998 to 2011, was a key part of the program’s rise to national prominence. He worked under legendary head coaches and helped shape some of the most iconic teams in school history, including the undefeated 2006 squad that won the Fiesta Bowl in stunning fashion.

“Coach Andrews was more than a coach — he was a father figure, a teacher, and a friend to so many,” said head coach Spencer Danielson in a statement. “His love for this university and for every player who walked through those locker room doors will never be forgotten. This is a heartbreaking day for all of Bronco Nation.”

Known for his calm demeanor, tactical mind, and unwavering support of his players, Andrews was often described as “the soul of the staff.” Many former players credit him with not just developing them as athletes, but guiding them through life beyond the field.

In recent years, Andrews remained close to the program as a consultant and frequent visitor to practices and alumni events. His death has sent shockwaves throughout the Boise State community, with tributes pouring in from former players, colleagues, and fans alike.

“He believed in me when no one else did,” wrote former quarterback Jared Zabransky on social media. “I owe him so much. Rest in peace, Coach. You’ll always be a Bronco.”

Boise State University announced that a moment of silence will be held in Andrews’ honor during the team’s next home game, and plans are underway to establish a scholarship fund in his name to support future student-athletes.

As Bronco Nation grieves, the legacy of Coach Mike Andrews will endure — etched into the blue turf and hearts of all who were lucky enough to know him.
