Warriors Rumors: Chris Paul Contract Deadline Pushed Back amid Paul George Trade Buzz
The Golden State Warriors and point guard Chris Paul have reportedly agreed to move the guarantee date on the $30.8 million owed to him for the 2024-25 season from Friday to Sunday as the team continues to look for a suitable trade partner.
The news also drops amid the Warriors’ reported interest in giving Los Angeles Clippers forward Paul George a four-year max deal, per ESPN’s Brian Windhorst on Wednesday on Get Up (h/t RealGM).
“Three years at a little bit less than the max contract, and Paul George, frankly, wants four years,” Windhorst said.
“He wants a full out max and there are a number of teams out there, I am told, that are prepared to give it to him, who are prepared to trade for him. One of those teams, potentially, is up the coast in Golden State.”
Sam Amick and Anthony Slater of The Athletic also reported Friday that the Warriors are believed to have “legitimate interest” in making George part of their core.
Paul once appeared to be the part of the Warriors’ core. Golden State made a big move last last July in a trade with the Washington Wizards, who added CP3 via the Phoenix Suns two weeks prior.
But the Warriors never got going in 2023-24, finishing 46-36 before losing in their first play-in game to the Sacramento Kings, ending their season.
Now Golden State is going back to the drawing board. It’s already clear, per the Wojnarowski report, that the team wants to move on from Paul. This could be it for Klay Thompson in Golden State after 13 seasons with the five-time All-Star entering free agency and talks between the two sides “frozen,” per a June 22 report from Slater.
And Andrew Wiggins’ time in San Francisco could be over, with league sources telling Logan Murdock of The Ringer that he’s expected to be “aggressively dangled” in trade talks.
