Former Green Bay Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy Undergoes Emergency Surgery
Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy will have surgery Wednesday — five days before the biggest game of the regular season against the Philadelphia Eagles — after being diagnosed with an acute case of appendicitis, the team said.
McCarthy experienced abdominal pain Wednesday morning before seeing the team’s medical staff. He is expected to be released from the hospital later Wednesday and anticipates coaching Sunday.
Cowboys coordinators Dan Quinn, Brian Schottenheimer and John Fassel will run practice while McCarthy, who turned 60 last month, recuperates. His absence complicates the process since he is the offensive playcaller, but he does designate duties to Schottenheimer and the other offensive coaches.
The Cowboys are first in points per game (32.3) and fifth in yards per game (380.4) with McCarthy calling plays. He has a 164-100-2 career regular-season record and is the fifth-winningest active coach.
What Does This Mean For The Cowboys In Week 14?
The 9-3 Dallas Cowboys have a huge matchup at home against the 10-2 Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday Night Football this weekend. There is a path for the Cowboys to secure a playoff spot this weekend, however, a lot of things need to go their way.
Having McCarthy on the sideline will be huge for the team, but it will be interesting to see if he is 100% for the game. McCarthy calls the offensive plays for the team. An offense that is number one in the NFL when it comes to scoring.
When it was made clear that McCarthy would take over play calling, Defensive Coordinator Dan Quinn had this to say:
“It’s really cool to see Mike in that role,” Quinn said on June 8. “It looks, from my opinion, like he’s having a blast. Sometimes as a head coach, when you’re not the play-caller, you are yearning for it. I’ve seen that with him, the energy he has for it, and it just looks like he’s having a blast.
He sets the whole menu and the table for us, and we’re having a good offseason, but him specifically, I’ve felt some happiness and some joy for him going out there, and you can see his competitive juices going. We’ll have some good battles [at training camp]. I’ve coached against Mike for a long time, he’s one of the very best.”
