LOS ANGELES – Bronny James, a freshman guard for the University of Southern California men’s basketball team, is set to make his collegiate basketball debut this weekend after suffering cardiac arrest in July.

James, the 19-year-old son of Los

Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James, is expected to play for USC on Sunday as the Trojans host Long Beach State at 1 p.m. PST, according to Ryan Kartje of the Los Angeles Times. Bronny participated in his first full-contact team practice on Thursday, and will be evaluated by

USC’s training staff following Friday’s practice to make a final determination for Sunday’s game.

“All indications are he feels great and he looks good,” USC head coach Andy Enfield said, according to Kartje’s report.

The news of Bronny’s planned debut for USC comes about one week after he was cleared for a full return to basketball in late November, which was about four months after he suffere..

cardiac arrest during a USC team practice in July. Bronny returned to practice this week and was expected to make his game debut “soon after,” a spokesperson for the James family said.

After Bronny was cleared to return, LeBron said he would be willing to miss an upcoming Lakers game if the schedule conflicted with Bronny’s first collegiate appearance.

“Whenever he’s cleared and ready to have his first game, I already told my teammates that if they play on the same day we’re playing, I’m going to have to catch them the next game,” James said Nov. 30. “Family over everything… But

definitely got to see Bronny’s first game whenever he’s cleared and ready to go.”

If Bronny is allowed to play Sunday, LeBron should have no scheduling conflict with the Lakers’ team schedule. The Lakers play the Indiana Pacers in the In-Season Tournament

Championship on Saturday night in Las Vegas, but then are off Sunday and Monday before playing at Dallas on Tuesday, Dec. 12.
