Reader, 29, is on the final year of a four-year, $53 million contract he signed with the Bengals before the 2020 season. He had an excellent chance of landing another long-term deal this winter, but this injury could derail that.

He was placed on injured reserve by the team and will miss the rest of the season. The injury was termed by the Bengals’ defensive coordinator as “heartbreaking.”

Nobody is going to replace DJ [on the pitch]. That’s just how DJ is, but we have complete confidence in the people behind him to step up and do a fantastic job,” Anarumo said. “He’s still hanging in there.” He’s a wonderful person. He’s a wonderful man. Contract year is challenging. We’re not blind to the consequences of all of this for our players. It’s something that not everyone notices, but we do. He’s a member of our family, and the enormity of the situation is sad. So we’re definitely sensitive to it, and we obviously hope he recovers completely.”
