SAD NEWS: Michigan Wolverine KEY PLAYER FOUND DEAD

DETROIT (CBS) – According to officials, former Michigan Wolverine quarterback Ryan Mallett drowned in Florida. He was 35 years old at the time.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office reported an apparent drowning around 2:12 p.m. Tuesday in Destin, Florida. According to the sheriff’s office, a group of persons near the second sandbar in the Gulf of Mexico battled to return to land. One individual, later named as Mallett, went underwater and was not breathing when he was rescued.

“Lifesaving measures were immediately undertaken, but the man was pronounced deceased at the Destin Emergency Room,” the sheriff’s office stated in a statement.

Mallett played for Michigan before moving to Arkansas in 2007. He was drafted by the New England Patriots in 2011, and he later played for the Houston Texans before concluding his career with the Baltimore Ravens from 2015 to 2017.

“I am deeply grieved by Ryan’s tragic death. In a tweet, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said, “My thoughts and prayers are with his family and the many people whose lives he touched.”

On Tuesday, the White Hall School District in Arkansas, where Mallett coached, issued a statement stating, “It is with great sadness that we share the loss of Coach Ryan Mallett.” Coach Mallett was a well-liked instructor and coach. We respectfully request that you consider his family, team, students, fellow coaches, and the White House.

In a statement, U of M football says “Michigan Football extends its deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and former teammates of QB Ryan Mallett. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Mallett family.”
