So Sad: bad news on top bad news announced in San Francisco 49ers

Worse, three of their key players were injured in the game, and their status for Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders was in doubt.

Despite the Commanders being a subpar opponent, the 49ers want to be at full strength since NFC playoff seeding is on the line.

If the 49ers win their final two regular-season games, they will claim the NFC’s top seed and the lucrative bye week that comes with it.

The 49ers would enter Sunday’s schedule needing a road win over the hapless Washington Commanders (4-12) and a Philadelphia Eagles loss to the lowly Arizona Cardinals (3-12) to take the prize early and earn the NFC’s No. 1 seed in the playoffs.

The 49ers, Eagles, and Lions are all 11-4, but San Francisco is the No. 1 seed due to tiebreakers over both Philadelphia and Detroit.

The 49ers defeated the Eagles 42-19 in Week 12, but they will not face the Lions again this season. However, San Francisco has a better record in NFC games (9-1 versus 7-3), thus they would beat Detroit in that scenario.

While a number of key players did not practice and their status for Sunday is unknown, a few key names appeared on the “limited participation” list, including star left tackle Trent Williams and Deebo Samuel, the jack-of-all-trades who could have a field day against Washington’s defense, which ranks last in the league.

First and foremost, Brock Purdy is healthy and ready to return after being injured in the Ravens game. He threw four interceptions against the Ravens and will have a chance to rebound against one of the NFL’s worst passing defenses on Sunday in Washington, D.C.

Williams’ injury may be the most serious, as groin injuries can be severe and keep players out for extended periods of time. He’s the greatest left tackle in football and essential to Kyle Shanahan’s system, which employs him in a number of ways, including run blocking and pass protection for Purdy.

Finally, Samuel’s release is a breath of fresh air. Anyone who follows the NFL knows how important Deebo Samuel is to the San Francisco 49ers.

Despite appearing in only 13 games this season, the dynamic wide receiver has 53 receptions for 834 yards and six touchdowns, averaging 15.5 yards per reception. On the ground, he has 33 carries for 179 yards and five touchdowns.

Samuel’s presence on the field enables the San Francisco 49ers to employ inventive packages and keep opposition teams on their heels at all times.

With the top spot in the NFC playoffs on the line, the health of these three players cannot be emphasized.

Armstead’s absence shouldn’t be a big deal against a struggling Commanders offense, and he’ll most likely be back for the playoffs when it matters the most.
