Sad News: bad news for Detroit Red Wings coach

The Detroit Red Wings are on their way to the west coast, looking to kick off 2024 on a high note. Meanwhile, keep up with the latest Red Wings news and rumors, including trade speculation, as the NHL Trade Deadline approaches.

Patrick Kane Trade Discussions
NHL source Chris Johnston said on OverDrive that the Red Wings could attempt to trade Patrick Kane if they fall farther out of the playoff picture. He also mentioned that a similar agreement was considered when Kane joined with Detroit.

This makes sense on the surface. The Red Wings have a high-performing player on an expiring contract who will undoubtedly attract attention. It makes no difference who that guy is – if the team isn’t going to make the playoffs, they should look into purchasing assets for said player.

It’s worth remembering, however, that when the Chicago Blackhawks traded Kane last year, they only received a conditional second-round pick in 2023 and a fourth-round pick in 2025. This should not be an issue this year, in my opinion.

Kane essentially stated that he only wanted to play for the New York Rangers, and the above-mentioned return was all that Chicago could provide. If the Red Wings follow suit, this year should be a good one.

To be honest, I don’t want Kane to leave. I’d want to see the Red Wings make the playoffs this year, and it’s still a possibility. If the team’s recent losing streak continues into January and February, the best thing to do is trade Kane and continue rebuilding.Trade Rumors Concerning Jonatan Berggren

Framing and language are critical components of delivering a message, whether to clarify it or to intentionally make it confusing. This comes to mind for me whenever I hear speculations about the Red Wings potentially trading Jonatan Berggren.

According to Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta, “one of the players the Red Wings have been discussing in some of their recent trade calls is young forward Jonatan Berggren.”

“I’m not sure he’d gone so far as asking for a trade from Detroit,” Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman later said of Berggren, “but everyone was aware he wanted more of an opportunity.”

Based on all of this, it’s logical to anticipate that if there’s interest in Berggren, teams will contact the Red Wings. It’s uncertain whether Yzerman is serious about relocating the 23-year-old. After all, he has claimed numerous times that he is in the listening business.

Yes, Berggren has done well in the AHL and throughout his few NHL appearances. It’s also true that the Red Wings have favored veteran players over him. That being said, you must consider the long game. Berggren, as previously mentioned,

Detroit won again Tuesday night in San Jose, defeating the Sharks 5-3. Alex Lyon made 24 saves, including a spectacular toe save on a Mike Hoffman breakaway attempt, while Lucas Raymond had three assists.

The Red Wings’ next two games are in Southern California, against the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday and the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday.

This road trip has the potential to be a watershed moment for the Red Wings due to the location, quantity of down time, opponents, and time of year. It’s an opportunity for them to regain ground in the playoff race following a disappointing month of December. A successful trip might also provide the Red Wings with much-needed momentum heading into the marathon that is the NHL playoffs.
