Jeff Driskel, the new Cleveland Browns quarterback, isn’t looking at Sunday’s game against the Bengals as an audition.

Jeff Driskel will start for the Cleveland Browns against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, and if he performs well, he may be retained for the postseason.

The Browns’ Week 18 meeting is meaningless. Cleveland has clinched the No. 5 seed in the playoffs and will face the winner of the AFC South. However, it may have an impact on their quarterback depth.

Driskel was selected the starting over PJ Walker, who was signed on December 29. It could be a move to minimize

“I don’t think so,” Driskel remarked when asked if the game felt like an audition. “The resume of every player in this league is what they put on the field.” But we’re only concerned with winning this game, and that’s all I’m concerned about. If I start thinking about things that may happen later, whether this year or in the future, I will be doing this team a disservice.”

On the offensive side of the ball, Driskel will be without a few crucial starters. Amari Cooper and Elijah Moore are among the receivers.

Early in the week, the Browns revealed that Flacco would sit against the Bengals. However, the team feels confidence in Driskel’s ability to complete the task. Part of that is attributable to his time in the Arizona Cardinals organization. Drew Petzing is the Cardinals’ offensive coordinator, and he previously worked with Kevin Stefanski and the Browns.

“Jeff’s a guy from Arizona with system knowledge,” Stefanski remarked on Wednesday, January 3. “P.J. Walker will serve as the backup.” He’s been fantastic for us. He began with games and won for us. But I just felt like it was the proper thing to do for the team in this case to give Jeff a chance to show us what he’s capable of.”

Driskel has appeared in 23 games with the Bengals (2018), Detroit Lions (2019), Denver Broncos (2020), and Houston Texans (2021-22), starting 11. In games he has started, he is 2-9.

Driskel has completed 216 of 365 passes for 2,228 yards and 14 touchdowns in his career. He has 384 yards rushing and three touchdowns. He got two starts.\

“That’s an intriguing statistic. “I’m surprised that exists,” Driskel added. “I heard you say that. Whatever that entails.”

Walker has started two games and played most of the third. In those games, he went 2-1 but struggled with turnovers. Walker threw five interceptions and only one touchdown pass. He also fumbled a few times.

Walker was waived by the Browns and later re-signed to the practice squad. After rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson sustained a season-ending hip injury, he was promoted to the 53-man roster.

With Deshaun Watson as the starter, Walker could have been a good backup option. However, for a postseason run, the Browns may seek to someone more in the style of Flacco.
