SO SAD: bad news for San Francisco 49ers coach

Then, they added even more fuel to that fire by trading for Christian McCaffrey, arguably the most dynamic offensive weapon in football.

McCaffrey had an outstanding end of the season in his first couple of months in the Bay area, but he’s been even more impressive in his first full campaign with the Niners.

That’s why HC Kyle Shanahan didn’t hesitate to call him the best offensive player he’s coached:“He’s had the best year as an offensive player that I’ve been a part of,” Shanahan told Greg Papa (via 49ers on NBC Sports). “Christian has been amazing in every facet we’ve asked of him. We’ve thrown him the ball, we’ve handed [him] the ball. When we give the ball to other people, and he has to block or just carry on being a distraction or decoy, he’s amazing.”

Truth be told, it’s hard to argue with that statement.

GLENDALE, ARIZONA - DECEMBER 17: Head coach Kyle Shanahan of the San Francisco 49ers looks on during the first half of a game against the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium on December 17, 2023 in Glendale, Arizona.

McCaffrey won’t even play in the season finale, yet he’s still going to end the season as the leader in both rush attempts (272) and rushing yards (1,459), adding 14 touchdowns on the ground.

If that wasn’t enough, the former Carolina Panthers star has logged 67 receptions on 83 targets for 564 yards and an additional seven scores.

McCaffrey’s dual-threat skill set has given Shanahan plenty to work with.

He can line him up all over the field and opposing defenses just have to give him so much attention, as he’s always one move away from breaking a tackle and piling up dozens of yards after the catch.

Also, having him out there has allowed Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, and Brandon Aiyuk to get so many wide-open looks because of all the defensive attention he gets.

The Niners look like the best team in the NFC right now, and if McCaffrey manages to stay healthy, they’ll always have a chance to beat anybody.
