During a Sheffield match last year, Adam Johnson passed away after being struck in the neck by an ice skate belonging to another player. His passing has spurred discussions over whether neck guards should be required in the sport.

According to authorities, a guy who was detained on suspicion of manslaughter after an ice hockey player died during a game has been released.

Adam Johnson of the Nottingham Panthers passed away in October of last year during a game at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena where he was struck in the neck by a skate from an opposing player.

A man was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter on 14 November and subsequently bailed by South Yorkshire Police.

On Friday, he was rebailed until 25 April 2024, a statement said.

The force said its “thoughts remain with Adam’s family at this time”.

The chief coroner for Sheffield, Tanyka Rawden, halted her probe into Mr. Johnson’s death last month while the police investigation proceeded. The Nottingham Panthers then published a video in honor of Adam Johnson.

The inquest opened quickly, but it was later revealed that Ms. Rawden had written a report to Ice Hockey UK and the English Ice Hockey Association (EIHA) regarding the use of neck guards in the sport regarding the Prevention of Future Deaths.
