BAD and GOOD NEWS: 2024 Super Bowl: Kansas City Chiefs come back to win…

After the 49ers almost gained the lead back thanks to a last-second field goal by the Chiefs that sent the game into overtime, Patrick Mahomes’ touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman solidified Kansas City’s place as the first NFL dynasty since the New England Patriots. Then and now: How similar are the Chiefs, 49ers to their Super Bowl 54 selves?

The Chiefs became the first team since the Patriots in 2003 and 2004 to win back-to-back titles. They have appeared in four of the last five Super Bowls.

Andy Reid is the fifth coach to win three or more Super Bowls, while Mahomes, at the age of 28, is the sixth quarterback in NFL history to do it.

San Francisco leads 10-3 at the half, and while Kansas City’s victory over the Philadelphia Eagles the previous season was a high-scoring epic, this one will be remembered as a classic by fans of strong defenses.

Nevertheless, Mahomes continued to be the difference maker, leading the Chiefs to within striking distance for their game-winning field goal and then holding on to the suspenseful drive that ended with Hardman’s touchdown.

That ensured yet another heartbreaking loss for the 49ers and their coach, Kyle Shanahan. The Chiefs’ most recent victory came in the second Super Bowl to go into overtime; the first saw the Patriots pull off a historic comeback in 2016 before defeating the Atlanta Falcons. The Chiefs started their Super Bowl run with a fourth-quarter comeback against San Francisco in 2020.
