Over the past three years, the Los Angeles Lakers have experienced quite the ride. After winning the championship in 2020, they struggled to make the playoffs due to injuries and bad trade decisions, but they eventually turned things around and made it all the way to the Western Conference Finals.
The team’s actions can either build on their success or cause them to regress. With young players like Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura, earning a title while remaining youthful seems to be the main objective. Naturally, as of July 1, neither is bound by a contract.
LeBron James mentioned that he might retire, thus Los Angeles needs to be aware that its franchise star might not be around for very long. James’s window may not be closed, but it also won’t remain open indefinitely.
Even with his rather cryptic remarks at the close of the season, James doesn’t seem to be planning to forgo his expected $46.9 million contract in 2023–2024. The Lakers are expecting James to be their team captain for the upcoming campaign, according to several sources.
If James astonishes everyone with some bizarre multiverse scenario, then forget about all that comes after.
Will he choose to forego his senior year in order to accompany his son Bronny James, who is expected to enter the NBA in 2024? That is still a real possibility if the Lakers are unable to secure the younger James in the draft.
