The story clarifies the Giants’ remaining free-agency plans first ran on NBC Sports Bay Area.

Ariz., Scottsdale — When Pablo Sandoval and Jorge Soler arrived at Giants camp on Sunday, there was a bit more excitement in the clubhouse. President of baseball operations Farhan  discussed how a significant late addition like Soler can provide a welcome boost to camp as the real work begins on the eve of the first full-squad workout.

However, the Giants don’t anticipate welcoming another well-known player anytime soon.

said he thinks the roster is just about set at the moment, although he left the door open to more spending down the line. He also seemingly sent a message to Scott , the agent for four marquee free agents still on the market.

“Tomorrow is our first full-squad workout and it gets kinda harder, not just operationally to add people, but you feel some level of commitment and obligation to the guys who are here competing for jobs,” said. “It’s a little bit more disruptive to add at this point and anybody who is a free agent, we’ve theoretically had 3 1/2 months to figure out a deal and if it hasn’t happened yet, at some point organizationally you just need to turn the page and focus on the players you have in-house.

“You never rule anything out, but right now it’s just where the calendar is at—whether it’s May, June, or even later. Again, we wouldn’t completely rule out the possibility, even though it obviously makes any more additions unlikely.”

Jordan Montgomery, Blake Snell, Matt Chapman, and Cody  are all represented by  and are all somewhat logical fit for the Giants. Particularly Chapman has been targeted, and manager Bob Melvin’s desire to have his former Gold Glove third baseman join him in San Francisco is well known around camp.

The Giants believe that the price has been excessively high during the . They signed Soler to a three-year, $42 million contract to close the power gap, and they have insisted that they believe in their young starting pitchers, so starting the season with Jordan Hicks, Kyle Harrison, Keaton Winn, and Tristan Beck behind Logan Webb is acceptable.

Speaking out publicly about potentially ending large-scale spending,  followed suit with other executives in the industry who pursued some of the best free agents this winter. Executives from a number of teams have stated this week that the winter spending likely will include the Texas Rangers, who would be a natural fit for a reunion with Montgomery, and the Toronto Blue Jays, who are rumored to be interested in  and Chapman.

“If he has the potential to become a regular player, even at shortstop, I wouldn’t be shocked. He is able to run, draw walks, make contact, and defend.”

The Giants’ largest  wager, Lee ($113 million), will disappear if they decide to forego further major acquisitions. They are second in terms of current free-agent spending, only behind a Los Angeles Dodgers team that is dominating the field, with Lee leading the way.

After pursuing and Yamamoto in the early stages, was let down when the Dodgers added both players for guaranteed money exceeding $1 billion. He stated that this won’t stop him from adopting a similar strategy the following .

“I think we’re just going to continue to take the big swing in free agency when it makes sense,”  stated. Some of the top five or ten baseball players are among the guys we’ve targeted but haven’t been able to sign. I’ve mentioned this about a few of them before, but more often than not, I’m shocked that more teams aren’t pursuing them.

“You just have to accept the fact that those will be extremely competitive. We always feel that we need to be able to change course when things don’t work out, as we discussed at the start of the offseason. I believe we’ve added some exciting players, and so far, I think you can feel that energy in camp.”
