In the Bahamas, this American couple constructed a house by the sea. Then a hurricane made landfall.
Though Norvell and Mark Slezycki had always dreamed of living by the sea, they had no idea that they would actually purchase an oceanfront home in the Bahamas when they went there for the first time in 1985.
The Abaco Islands, which are north of Nassau, were “stumbled upon” by the couple, who at the time was living in New York City. They were surprised by how undeveloped the island chain was at the time.
“We continued to return, nearly annually,” Norvell says to CNN Travel. And visiting every other island in the chain, spending time on almost all of them.
“And we simply couldn’t get over the notion that some islands could be so undeveloped even now.”
The couple visited Great Guana Cay, a seven-mile-long islet in the middle of the Abaco Islands, frequently throughout the years as they grown to love it and wondered what it would be like to live there after they retired.
The Slezyckis once took a bicycle journey around the entire island and stopped when they reached a location that caught their attention.
“We began to wonder who owned this entire land. Can you tell us who owns it and whether they are looking to sell it? After that, we immediately took off,” adds Norvell.
