Two years after signing defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah to a four-year, $65 million contract, the Dolphins informed him that he is being released, a league source told the Miami Herald. After the NFL announced on Friday that the salary ceiling will be set at $255.4 million in 2024, Miami was roughly $38 million over the cap. Ogbah’s release will save the organization about $13.7 million with a pre-June 1 designation. The increase in cap is much greater than most estimates, which ranged from $242 million to $242 million. Ogbah, 30, has no more guaranteed money left on his contract, but he was expected to have the seventh-largest cap hit on the team at $17.7 million.

Ogbah played infrequently in the 2023 season despite a long list of ailments at edge defender, so the release was anticipated given the Dolphins’ cap problems. In 2023, Ogbah played a career-low 25% of defensive snaps under former defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. “On January’s locker cleanout day, I always say I want to be in Miami, but you never know what can happen,” Ogbah remarked. Ogbah was first signed by the Dolphins in 2020 to a $15 million, two-year contract. For the next two seasons, he led Miami with nine sacks, and he was rewarded.
