At last, Detroit’s first 3D-printed home is prepared to go on the market with the cutting of a golden ribbon.

Citizen Robotics and Develop Architecture conceptualized and designed the 988-square-foot, two-bedroom house at 1444 Sheridan in Detroit’s Islandview neighborhood. The project took slightly over three years to complete, from the initial 3D design to the printing of the building materials and the final construction of the house.

The future of architecture, according to Citizen Robotics, lies in automation and 3D printing.

“All other industries are using automation. … Why not homebuilding?” stated Fernando Bales, the house’s constructor of record and the built-lab manager for Citizen Robotics.

In order to create a home that is more resilient to disasters and has lower utility costs for its occupants, the updated procedure employs less work, less money, less waste, and even less noise while utilizing more sustainable materials.

The Michigan State Housing Development Authority’s Neighborhood Stabilization Program provided a $160,000 subsidy for the home’s initial building costs.

The house was designed by Develop Architecture’s Bryan Cook using a digital 3D model, which enabled Citizen Robotics to produce every surface from the precise model. The project then moved on to printing at the Citizen Robotics facility in southwest Detroit, where building blocks for all of the outside walls were created by a robot arm applying layer after layer of cementitious 3D-printable mortar.

Following the delivery of the wall parts to the location, construction got underway in October 2022. One by one, the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing contractors arrived, and together they installed an Exterior Insulation Finish System (EIFS) to provide insulation and a stucco exterior finish. They painted the house a pea-green color and added black windowpanes, siding, and 3D-printed flower beds to give it a polished look. The undertaking was completed using
