On Friday, Nebraska softball resumed play, this time in Cathedral City, California, site of the  ‘ opening two games in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. As of Friday, Nebraska was 6-3 and riding a four-game winning streak. San Diego State, the reigning Mountain West Conference champions, was the opponent the Huskers faced on Friday.

Neither club scored any runs in the first inning. Sydney Gray, a senior infielder, doubled in the first inning to provide Nebraska a brief danger, but the Huskers were unable to take advantage of the opportunity.

Nebraska got off to an early lead in the second. With no outs and the bases loaded, the Huskers took a 1-0 lead when rookie pitcher Emmerson Cope grounded out to bring in the runner from third. Cope held the Aztecs off in the bottom of the second, but two quick hits in the third inning gave them a one-run lead.

But the tie didn’t last long, as senior catcher Peyton Cody hit her second solo home run of the year in the top of the fourth inning. When Nebraska replaced senior pitcher Sarah Harness for Cope due to two early singles, San Diego State faced another threat in the bottom of the first. Despite the challenging
