Most entrepreneurs and executives aim to appoint talented people to positions or titles they hold. But the truth is that people will succeed if given the chance to do what they do best. They will also perform exceptionally well when contained neatly within tasks, subcategories, or titles. People will evolve outside of the conventional title-oriented organization pyramid structure and into a more web-like structure if their talents are matched to those specific duties.

I employed someone to serve as our company’s CFO. While not all of his talents were required for that function, some of them were ideal. Indeed, it became evident within a few months that he was unfit for that position, and I had made a grave error. He pointed out how pitiful his pay was in comparison to what he should have earned and saw prospects to work as CFO for other firms when I referred to him as the CFO. Despite my attempts to highlight that he lacked specific skills that we need, he was limited to this role and eventually left our company.
