NFL Rumors: Six Teams Will File Proposals to Adjust Trade Deadline, Including the 49ers and EaglesBucks Hire Doc Rivers, NBA Trade Rumors, and Magic Guard Jalen Suggs! - The Ringer

Six teams are reportedly asking to move the NFL trade deadline up by two weeks, including the last two NFC champions.

The San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles, Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, Washington Commanders, and Detroit Lions intend to present an NFL proposal to change the trade deadline from Week 8 to Week 10. This information is according to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports.

Jones stated that it is still “unclear” whether NFL team owners will adopt the idea during the league’s annual meetings in Florida the following month. Jones was informed by a source that “there’s disagreement among both owners and general managers themselves about whether the deadline should be moved at all.

“Our professional sports league has the earliest trade deadline by far,” general manager Andrew Berry of the Browns stated. “If you consider the other four major sports leagues… I believe that the trade deadline for both baseball and basketball occurs after roughly 65% of the games have been played. Hockey is at 78%. Right now, we’re at 45%. Our suggestion would keep the season’s integrity intact while increasing it to roughly 55% of games played.”

Moving the deadline to Week 9, which makes sense now that the NFL has added a 17th game to the schedule, is an additional choice.

Jones clarified that the NFL’s reluctance stems from their aim to avoid tanking, as delaying the deadline could encourage teams to ship.
