Kevin Tansey calls Robert Dowd of the Sheffield Steelers the “best captain I’ve ever played with.”
The Great Britain international is doing a respectable job of donning the “C” thus far. He was also named captain of the national squad for last month’s Olympic qualifying tournament.
He signed a two-year contract extension with the club yesterday, extending his stay until the summer of 2026. It seems sense, considering how things have gone in his first season leading up to this point.
With just 14 games left in the regular season, the Steelers lead the EIHL standings by 12 points ahead of Saturday night’s visit from Manchester Storm to the Utilita Arena.
They will return to home ice in 12 days as they attempt to win a second Challenge Cup under head coach Aaron Fox. They were not the winners of this trophy during the Covid-shortened 2019–20 campaign.
Neither Dowd’s point total nor his comparison to prior campaigns have been impacted by his leadership role; with 44 points in 49 games, he is on par.
Before moving to South Yorkshire last autumn, veteran defenseman Tansey played in over 400 games across the AHL in North America, Czechia, Italy, and Denmark. Tansey believes he was immediately aware of Dowd’s leadership qualities.

Tansey remarked, “Dowdy is without a doubt the best captain I have ever played with.” “He battles every game, gives his best for the team, is the most unselfish player on the squad, and is a kind guy in general.
“There are just too many positive things to say about him. He truly is the epitome of what a captain ought to be.
I believe it was only two days into pre-season training camp when I realized that this guy was going to be our captain—it was that clear—before captains or assistants were even assigned.
It’s obvious when someone conducts themselves that way, and he’s done a fantastic job guiding the group.
