The Philadelphia Phillies are a largely veteran squad, so there aren’t many exciting new guys to watch in Spring Training this year. The majority of them are merely going through the motions in an attempt to prepare for the next season.
Johan Rojas, however, is a young man who is still trying to establish himself. The 23-year-old outfielder just finished a strong batting rookie campaign.302/.342/.430 in 59 games with 14 steals and 13 extra-base hits.
But he fell apart totally in the postseason, batting a horrendous.had considerably more strikeouts (15) than hits (4), batting 093/.114/.163. In the postseason, he was thoroughly exposed by strong pitching, which made some question if he had what it took to be a major league bat.
Kevin Long, the hitting coach for the Phillies, backed Rojas on Wednesday, claiming that he is a big league player.
But batting hasn’t been one of Rojas’ main ways to demonstrate that throughout Spring Training.200/.200/.300 with six strikeouts against four hits.
At this time, a number of shortcomings in Rojas’s game are starting to show.
He may not make enough contact to take use of his speed since he lacks plate discipline and power.
Rojas appears to be a No. 9 hitter, which is acceptable as long as he contributes to the bases and plays solid outfield defense. But as a pinch runner and fourth outfielder, he might be more useful than a regular player.
