When the 49ers agreed to terms on a one-year contract with veteran free-agent cornerback Isaac Yiadom on Friday, they may have found a hidden treasure.

Six-year NFL veteran Yiadom is among the finest in the league when it comes to press coverage. He is a low-risk, high-reward choice for the 49ers’ developing defence under new coordinator Nick Sorensen.

After a stellar season with the New Orleans Saints, Arjun Menon’s scatter plot graph of Pro Football Focus data provides a clear picture of what Yiadom brings to San Francisco.

With a press coverage rate of more than 40%, 6-foot-1 Yiadom stands out on the graph’s right peak, surpassing stars Sauce Gardner and A.J. Terrell, demonstrating her great performance.

With a 30.4 percent incompletion percentage in the 2023 NFL season, Yiadom was a dominant force in close-contact situations with wide receivers.

Despite only starting eight games, he also tied for the seventh-most passes defended (14) in the league. With 23 PDUs across 17 starts, his new 49ers colleague Charvarius Ward lead the NFL.

By permitting just 23 receptions on 47 targets, Yiadom established a reputation for himself with the Saints. With an overall grading of 81.1, he came in 14th place and 22nd place in PFF’s coverage grading of 80.4.

Yiadom’s tape, of course, backs up his stats.

Before becoming well-known as a tight coverage expert, the 28-year-old was mostly a stellar member of the New Orleans special team. Yiadom had 267 special teams appearances and played 515 defensive snaps in the previous season; San Francisco likely values his versatility.

After being chosen by Denver with the 35th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the former Saint is a journeyman who has also worn the uniforms of the Broncos, New York Giants, Green Bay Packers, and Houston Texans.

Yiadom’s one-year “prove it” pact could eventually lead to an extended collaboration, hopefully for the 49ers.

In 84 career games, the Boston College graduate has recorded 26 PDUs, two interceptions, and 158 total tackles. In 2024, Yiadom will be keen to boost his stats and support San Francisco in their quest for a sixth Vince Lombardi Trophy.
