Rangers: “Furious” Jack Butland’s response at Ibrox when England’s chance to qualify for the Euros was lost

Barry Ferguson has backed an “angry” Jack Butland to channel his England frustration into proving it was the wrong choice at Rangers.

The former captain of Ibrox told the Daily Record on March 16 that, given the circumstances, he would also be incensed. He claimed that the “absolute man mountain” had little chance of making the summer Euros after Gareth Southgate passed him over for the national squad.

He is convinced that the Rangers keeper should not be ignored by the Three Lions manager, but he does expect the 31-year-old to concentrate on his continued success in the SPFL.

“I would be disappointed if I were him,” Ferguson remarked. If that happened, I would be upset. However, he will utilise the remaining games of the season to go out and prove to everyone how wonderful of a goalie he is if he is feeling irate, frustrated, or disillusioned.

Although he didn’t make the squad, there is still a remote chance that he will travel to Germany, and that was a bad decision.

But at this point, Jack is limited to playing the same style he has always played since moving here. Nothing else is in his power. And ever since he arrived, he has been the Rangers’ man mountain in the back.

Butland put on a solid display and didn’t allow the surprising exclusion affect him, as Rangers were eliminated from the Europa League by Benfica 1-0 later that day.

For the remainder of the campaign, there isn’t much reason to anticipate anything other than a continuation of his excellent form from this season.

Pro athletes frequently use slights—real or perceived—as self-motivation to improve, so it’s possible that Rangers win and England lose—though obviously not in Southgate’s eyes.

Although the Three Lions manager has led them farther than any manager since Sir Alf Ramsey won the World Cup 58 years ago, he receives a lot of flak from supporters south of the border for his choices and the assertion that he is stifling a gifted generation.

Despite sending coaches to watch Butland, it is difficult not to view the decision to not even consider him for the pre-Euros friendly as a mistake.

It is evident how much better the Scottish Premiership and the Premier League are compared, but a shot is a shot, and Butland has been making many of saves and playing well in Europe, so it is definitely disappointing.
