It seemed early in the season that Russell’s second stint with the Purple and Gold would not last. During the summer, Trae Young has been mentioned as a

possible trade target. But Russell’s recent surge in output might make Rob Pelinka

reconsider. Sam Quinn of CBS Sports recently explained why he thinks Russell could prevent the Lakers from making a grave error.

Quinn wrote on Friday, “One could even argue that finding a younger headliner is a necessity for life after LeBron, with

James getting close to 40 years old.” However, nothing that has transpired for the Lakers since 2018 indicates that it would be wise to use three first-round

selections to acquire a second guard who is a heavy user but has poor 3-point shooting. Russell may be the only member of the team capable of rescuing this front office from its own self-destruction.”

Young seems like the perfect addition to the Lakers on paper. In addition to being an All-Star, he is a well-known player who excels at creating plays and scoring from outside the area. Yet, when you take a deeper look, you notice that his defense

is a major issue, and his scoring can be incredibly streaky. Pelinka cannot afford to take a risky big swing with the last of his team’s tradeable assets.

Russell isn’t a superstar. He is, however, a highly talented guard who gets better when he’s in rhythm and feels trusted within the system. Darvin Ham has found a way to get the best out of him. Furthermore, he’s already proven he can coexist with LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

Trading for Young would be a risky roll of the dice. Russell is proving that Pelinka doesn’t need to look at the guard position when he’s attempting to

upgrade the roster in the summer. Young’s name may be attractive on paper, but the Lakers would be better served sticking to the guard they already

have. They can’t afford to take such a big risk without knowing the move will be somewhat of a success.

Quinn is correct. Perhaps Russell’s increased output prevented from making an expensive mistake.
