With the surprising deal of Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday for a 2025 sixth-round pick that may convert to a fourth-round pick, the Chicago Bears will usher in a new era of football in 2024.

Since Chicago secured the first selection in the 2024 NFL Draft, Fields’ future there has been called into question. Given the quality of the quarterback class, the deal on Saturday virtually guarantees that the Bears will select one of Jayden Daniels, Caleb Williams, or Drake Maye in the first round. Williams is the top overall pick in a number of mock drafts.

However, Pittsburgh enters a new chapter as well. After the Denver Broncos released Russell Wilson, the Steelers signed him and sent Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles. This offseason, there will be competition for the Week 1 starter, according to coach Mike Tomlin, which Pickett was all for.

Tomlin told reporters that he was eager to watch Pickett take on the opposition and that he had faith in the quarterback.

But according to reports, Pickett’s perspective shifted once Wilson entered the picture. Though maybe it appeared too improbable that he would win out Wilson to be the starter, he was still going to fight with whatever the Steelers brought in.

Fields’ time in Chicago didn’t work out, but the team had other problems with him at quarterback. He’ll start again in Pittsburgh, just like the Bears, where the 2021 first-round selection will back up Wilson, according to a number of rumours.

Wilson posted, “Let’s get it @justinfields,” as soon as word of the deal leaked out, welcoming Fields to Pittsburgh. He wrote to his X account, “QB room about to be (three fire emojis).”

Regarding Wilson being the Steelers’ starting quarterback, Tomlin made care to be upfront with Fields. Fields will still participate in training camp this summer, but it looks like a big Week 1 performance or an injury to Wilson will be required for Fields to start.
