Lions Re-Work Contract of Newly Acquired Starter: Report

Throughout this offseason, the Detroit Lions have ranked among the teams with the most cap room. After renegotiating Carlton Davis’ deal, the team’s new cornerback, they now have more cap space.

Davis “agreed to convert $6 million of his $14 million salary into a signing bonus,” according to Kyle Meinke of MLive.com. In order to stretch out his cap hit until the 2027 campaign, the Lions also added three vacant years.

The Lions’ 2024 cap space will increase by $4.5 million as a result of the changes.

Ultimately, Davis’ cap charge for the upcoming season has been reduced from $14.35 million to $9.85 million, and the $4.5 million in savings will be automatically realised when the deal expires the following year, according to Meinke. “That pushes some money into a year where the salary cap is expected to grow again, and gives Detroit more financial flexibility for this season.”

Davis’ new 2024 cap hit was reported by Over the Cap to be $9.853 million.

The Lions’ remaining cap space is $34.27 million with the added room. That is the sixth-most in the NFL as of March 18.

Davis was traded by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the Lions on March 11. The Lions acquired a 2024 third-round selection in return for a 2025 sixth-round selection, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
