ROCKWORD, IL On Saturday night, the Grand Rapids Griffins were on the verge of losing two points, but some late magic transformed the bad news into a victory.

By the end of the second period, the Griffins had taken a 3-0 lead over the Rockford IceHogs. But with just minutes remaining in regulation, the Chicago Blackhawks’ AHL affiliate rallied for three straight goals, two of which came from Cole Guttman, to tie the game.

The goal stood despite a quick review, giving Aston-Reese his 12th goal of the year and, more significantly, assisting the Griffins in stealing a 4-3 victory.

Grand Rapids had given away a 3-0 lead against the IceHogs on March 3 in a shootout loss at Van Arena, marking the second time this month that this had happened.

In the first period, the Griffins took the lead thanks to a sloppy mistake by Drew. Cross Hansa scored his eighth goal of the year after intercepting the IceHogs goaltender’s pass. Grand Rapids led by two points later in the quarter when Marco Kasper tipped in a Taro Hirose point shot while having the man advantage.

With little over six minutes remaining in the season, Antti Tourist scored his fifth goal of the year to give GR a three-goal advantage.
