Sky Sports publish ‘salary spend’ of all Super League teams: Salford second-lowest, Wigan highest

Sky Sports has released an estimate of how much each of the 12 Super League teams would likely spend this season. The defending champion Wigan Warriors are said to have spent the most on player pay in 2024 ($3.1 million).

In the lead-up to Friday night’s match between Warrington Wolves and Leeds Rhinos, presenter Brian Carney of Sky Sports disclosed the total amount that all 12 clubs are spending on the league this year based on his rese….

The Warriors are the only team spending more than £3 million on player pay this year, and they are ranked first in Sky’s league rankings.

Three other teams—the Leeds Rhinos, Huddersfield Giants, and St Helens—are expected to invest £2.7 million, while two more teams, the Catalans Dragons and Warrington Wolves, are expected to spend £3 million.

According to Sky Sports, Hull FC is spending £1.8 million on player wages, while the London Broncos are, predictably, the competition’s lowest spenders on salaries, spending £1.4 million. The finite cap is set at £2.1 million again this season, but clubs are allowed to spend more than that through loopholes like the marquee player ruling. Hull KR is allegedly spending £2.4 million, with Leigh Leopards spending £2.2 million. The other four clubs are reportedly spending below the finite cap of £2.1 million.

Clubs are now allowed to have three star players, up from two the previous season, provided that at least one of them has Federation Training.

In the past, all marquee players were valued at £150,000 when it came to a club’s salary cap, with the exception of Club-Trained players, who were valued at £75,000. However, going forward, Club-Trained Marquee Players will now be valued at £50,000, Federation-Trained Marquee Players at £100,000, and Non-Federation Trained Marquee Players at £150,000.

The chart is interesting to read, not least because it shows how, despite their strong start to the season, the Salford Red Devils are once again punching well above their weight.
