Sky Sports publish ‘salary spend’ of all Super League teams: Sanford second-lowest, Wigan highest

In the lead-up to Friday night’s match between Warrington Wolves and Leeds Rhinos, presenter Brian Carney of Sky Sports disclosed the total amount that all 12 clubs are spending on the league this year based on his research.

The Warriors are the only team spending more than £3 million on player pay this year, and they are ranked first in Sky’s league rankings.

Three other teams—the Leeds Rhinos, Huddersfield Giants, and St Helens—are expected to invest £2.7 million, while two more teams, the Catalans Dragons and Warrington Wolves, are expected to spend £3 million.

Leigh Leopards are said to be investing £2.2 million, while Hull KR is reportedly spending £2.4 million. Sky Sports claims that the other four clubs are spending less than the £2.1 million cap.

Salford Red Devils and Castleford are paying £1.7 million and £1.8 million, respectively, on player salaries at Hull FC. The London Broncos, with their £1.4 million salary budget, are shockingly the least expensive team in the league.

This season, the finite cap is set at £2.1 million, but clubs are permitted to spend more than that due to a number of loopholes, such as the marquee player ruling.

Clubs are now allowed to have three star players, up from two the previous season, provided that at least one of them has Federation Training.

In the past, all marquee players were valued at £150,000 when it came to a club’s salary cap, with the exception of Club-Trained players, who were valued at £75,000. However, going forward, Club-Trained Marquee Players will now be valued at £50,000, Federation-Trained Marquee Players at £100,000, and Non-Federation Trained Marquee Players at £150,000.
