James Graham, a former St Helens player who has established himself in Australia with a stellar NRL career, embraced Paul Wellens, his former teammate and current St Helens coach, following Wellens’ masterful victory in his first competitive game in command.

A great moment, but maybe the best part was off camera when Graham on his podcast The Bye Round shared a humorous account of his response to the winning drop goal.

Graham said, “I thought I heard the announcer say extra time.”

“He didn’t say golden point that I heard. They have a nice offensive scrum, and I’m thinking, “They’re playing it safe here,” until I see Dodd getting ready for the field goal.

The bench is all sprinting after him when he kicks it, and I’m thinking, ‘go back, go back,’ but then it seems like they’ve won.

“I know what it means to them since I have a lot of friends in the community and on that team. I’ve been a fan of that club since I was a young lad, and I still am.

“Looking at Penrith’s home record, it’s just one of those sports experiences that makes you say, ‘Wow, I’m watching something amazing.'”
