The San Francisco 49ers are expected to select an offensive lineman in the first round.

But the 49ers should also focus on cornerback as a position of equal importance. For the past two seasons, they have been searching for a third cornerback to go with their anchors, Charvarius Ward and Deommodore Lenoir.
Furthermore, there isn’t a long-term cornerback on the 49ers roster. After 2024, Lenoir and Ward will be free agents. They get a fairly talented cornerback and at least four years if they draft one in the first round.

For this reason, T.J. Tampa of Iowa was ridiculed by Pro Football Focus to the 49ers at pick No. 31. Regretfully, I don’t think the 49ers will select a cornerback in the first several rounds of the draft. On days one and two of the draft, the 49ers typically select players that fill a need.NFL free agency: Why Chiefs placed UFA tag on defensive end Melvin Ingram - Arrowhead Pride

After signing Isaac Yiadom and Rock Ya-Sin in the past month, the 49ers don’t really need a cornerback. Along with Ambry Thomas, both of these guys will fight for a starting position on the outside—that is, if they even give Thomas a fair chance.

If the 49ers draft a cornerback in the first few rounds, they will practically have to give the rookie that preference because he was

drafted at such a height. If this is done, there will be no purpose to Yiadom and Ya-Sin’s signings. Not unless the 49ers genuinely don’t mind if the rookie is introduced in the midst of the season and is allowed to develop gradually.
But if a rookie can’t start right away, I just don’t see the 49ers taking that and caring to wait for him to improve throughout the season. Free agent signings shouldn’t stop a team from selecting a player at a position if that player is very good; nevertheless, I don’t think the 49ers will select an outstanding prospect at cornerback if one is available.

For them, the best position in the first few rounds appears to be the offensive or defensive line, followed by a cornerback on day three of the draft.
