Since 1963, the Dallas Cowboys have dominated DFW. After just four seasons in Dallas, the AFL rival Dallas Texans relocated to Kansas City to become the Chiefs in that season.
Many believed that the region could not sustain two professional football teams, and after the Texans finished just one season shy of winning the AFL championship, owner Lamar Hunt moved his franchise to Kansas City.
Eric Johnson, the mayor of Dallas, now wants the team to return to North Texas after Kansas City rejected a tax referendum intended to raise money for renovations at Arrowhead Stadium.
Johnson told The Athletic, “The history is so rich, the connections are so deep.” “We could really put together the arrangements that would allow them to come here.”
But is it really that likely? Not in the slightest.
Mayor of Kansas City Quinton Lucas responded angrily, stating that he wants everyone in the nation to know that the Chiefs are here to stay.
“I’ve heard stories, even from the Dallas mayor. Don’t believe the noise, Kansas City. We are dedicated to keeping our teams, even if it means incurring much lesser costs than moving inside the same metro area (consider the infrastructure build-out required). In 2040 and long after, both teams will be in Kansas City,” Lucas stated on ProFootballTalk.
The Chiefs’ current Arrowhead lease expires following the 2030 campaign. The team intends to build a new stadium or an addition after that.
Long-term solutions usually emerge from situations like this, and given the Chiefs’ current success, it’s unlikely that they will leave Kansas City. Particularly considering that there are only two big sports teams in the area, including the Chiefs.
