High art in a high time: bongs in Minnesota after legalization
Making pipes is an art form and a highly skilled trade for glass artisans, and many believe Minnesota is becoming a center for this growing industry.

Eric Ross fuses glass bubbles over a bunsen burner on an endlessly spinning industrial lathe in his Shakopee home glass studio.

He forms the bubbles into what will soon be a $1,300 bong by blowing into a long tube. Ross, who has a tube in his teeth, claims that since Minnesota’s recreational cannabis laws were passed in August, there has been less stigma.

Ross remarks, “It’s so nice that I can call it a bong now.” “It’s so nice to just say ‘bong,’ but it used to always have to be ‘water pipes’ or whatever.”

Before August, bongs—which are used to smoke cannabis—had long been considered drug paraphernalia in a legal gray area in the state.

“I was doing something illegally for 22 years in a state, but there was a way to make it legal. It’s great that it’s now legal for family and neighbors,” remarks Ross. “To be honest, it’s just relieved all of that needless anxiety.”

Ashley Ann Austin, a glass artist from Minneapolis, concurs.

“In the last few years, I’ve become less hesitant to disclose to my family my line of work,” remarks Austin. It’s less stigmatized, and even somewhat squarish people say, ‘That’s art.’ particularly when I show them my creations.”

Many glass artists claim that Minnesota is turning into a center for pipe-making, which is a highly skilled craft and an art form in its own right.

According to

“local hand-blown glass pipes have been exploding over the last few years in Minnesota, and specifically in the Twin Cities, but all over the state.”
