Verstappen improves title hold with the Chinese GP victory.
One day after winning the short race with ease, Max Verstappen completed a brilliant weekend by winning the first Chinese Grand Prix in five years yesterday, increasing his lead in the world championship.
For the first time since 2019, Formula One was back at the Shanghai International Circuit, and the three-time world champion was once again in a class by himself.
Lando Norris finished 13.7 seconds behind him, and Sergio Perez, his Red Bull teammate, finished third, six seconds behind.

A couple of weeks ago, it appeared certain that Red Bull would win again, but in the middle of the race, two safety cars appeared in short succession.
Following several pit stops, Perez trailed Norris of McLaren and Charles Leclerc of Ferrari. Verstappen was only kept from earning a maximum of 34 points for the weekend when, following a late tyre change, Fernando Alonso beat him to the fastest lap.
As he advances toward a fourth straight world championship, Verstappen was winning his fourth grand prix out of five in 2024 and the 58th of his career. It was another brilliant performance.

It was an incredible feeling. Verstappen stated, “We were extremely quick the entire weekend.”
“The car was essentially on rails and I could do anything I wanted with it, and we survived the restarts well.”
With Red Bull currently 44 points ahead of Ferrari in the constructors’ title, he extended his lead over Perez at the top of the world championship to 25 points.
Verstappen, who won in China for the first time, continued, “Those kinds of weekends are amazing to feel and to achieve what we did this weekend is fantastic.”
Having started from fourth on the grid, Norris was thrilled to finish in second place, his best finish of 2024.

Things started to move today. The Englishman remarked, “I don’t know why; it wasn’t the race I was expecting, but I just got comfortable.”
For the fourth time in his last five races this season, the reliable Perez placed on the podium, although he claimed that the safety car kept him from finishing.
We actually paid a hefty price for it. Fighting like that drastically reduces the tire’s life, according to Perez.
