ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter provided an explanation of why the Minnesota Vikings “have attempted.

in the 2024 draft order—from No. 11 to the No. 3 place currently held by the News

in a post that was published on Monday morning.

According to Schefter, the “preference” of the Minnesota Vikings is to use quarterback Drake Maye of the North Carolina Tar Heels to replace the departing Kirk Cousins, who signed a free agent contract with the Atlanta Falcons.

Josh McCown, the quarterbacks coach for Minnesota, coached Maye in high school, and it’s said that the Vikings “are absolutely in love with” Maye.

The consensus seems to be that Caleb Williams, a star player for the USC Trojans, will be selected first overall by the Chicago Bears. On Monday, Schefter disclosed that “the signs continue to point to” the Washington Commanders picking Jayden Daniels, the quarterback from LSU Tigers, with the second pick in the draft.

Various stories have connected Daniels, Maye, and Michigan Wolverines signal-caller J.J. McCarthy to the Patriots. Some have hinted that, should McCarthy fall out of the top three, Minnesota would advance to select him at No. 4 or No. 5.

According to a Sunday report from ESPN’s Mike Reiss, it might require “an unprecedented deal” for New England to give up its third-round pick in favor of a trade down.

The Patriots are reportedly looking for “a lot more than” three

“Many are waiting to see how the Patriots value Maye versus J.J. McCarthy and whether New England could make a play like the Cardinals, who made two trades in round one a year ago,” Schefter stated.

On Friday, Patriots writer Mark Daniels of MassLive made the suggestion that the Vikings’ first-round selections in 2025 and 2026 for choice No. 3 may be accepted by New England in addition to the overall picks No. 11 and No. 23 this year.

In exchange, Minnesota would be able to get Maye, and this Thursday night the Patriots might take a chance on quarterback Michael Penix Jr. of the Washington Huskies by selecting him with the 11th overall choice.

In any case, Patriots beat writer Chris Mason of MassLive made the following prediction in a mock draft that was uploaded on

This week will reveal whether or not Minnesota will trade for the third overall pick in order to acquire outstanding wide receiver Justin Jefferson.
