A team would have to promise to throw the ball to a wide receiver at least 150 times a season in order to spend more than $30 million on him.

Although the 49ers and Brandon Aiyuk are reportedly at odds over a contract, the reason for this has not been made public for months.

We can now see. It’s likely that Aiyuk will demand a salary of at least $30 million each season, and the 49ers have never before invested that much in a wide receiver. However, in 2024, it will be the going rate for an All Pro wideout. Amon-Ra

, a receiver for the Lions All Pro, just agreed to a $120 million, four-year deal extension. Therefore, Aiyuk’s extension would need to be just as profitable, if not more so.

A team would have to promise to throw the ball to a wide receiver at least 150 times a season in order to spend more than $30 million on him. For instance, St. Brown received 164 targets in the previous season and 146 in the previous one. The Lions feel good about giving him that much money because of this.

The 49ers have never given Aiyuk more than 114 targets in a season, so it makes sense that they are reluctant. In addition, he had trouble in the playoffs a few months ago, catching only nine of his twenty targets.

Why therefore should the 49ers provide him a season salary of $30 million? The expense of 75 catches a season shouldn’t be so high. For twenty-five percent of the cost, they could substitute ninety percent of his output. And they would still have the best bunch of offensive skill players in the NFL even if they traded Aiyuk and signed a rookie wide out in his place.

It makes far more sense to trade Aiyuk than to pay him.
