Leeds United could face devastating points deduction – sources

Leeds United could potentially be hit with a points deduction if they fail to pay back the £1

90million worth of transfer fees they owe on time.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke noted how Sheffield United were recently hit with a two-point deduction by the EFL after defaulting on some of the transfer payments they owed.

The Whites’ latest accounts showed that £73.6million worth of their outstanding transfer fees are due to be paid by the end of June this year.

The clubs they owe money to could potentially raise the issue with FIFA or the FA if it isn’t resolved before the deadline, creating an “ugly” situation for Leeds.

O’Rourke suggested the unpaid transfer fees are a “worrying sign” for the club after they also posted a £54 loss in the most recent financial year.

Leeds United must get on top of concerning financial situation

Road chiefs will be hoping their side can secure an immediate return to the Premier League this season to ease their financial concerns.

There has been plenty of speculation that Leeds could be forced to sell some of their key players if they don’t go up in the coming weeks.

That’s not only because some of their stars could be keen to try their hand at a higher level next season, but also due to the club’s potential need to raise some cash to pay off their debts.

O’Rourke revealed the Whites could be edging closer to the £83million worth of losses clubs are allowed to make in the EFL over a three-year period, having recorded a £7.5 loss in 2021-2022.

It raises the stakes on the field for Daniel Farke’s side over the coming weeks as they look to secure their place in the top flight next season.
