Orlando Pirates crush Royal AM in the intensifying chase for second place.
The Orlando Pirates, playing in the DStv Premiership, dominated Royal AM 4-0 on Sunday at Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg. They were playing at their most fluid level.
For the Soweto Giants, who had four different goal scorers on the day, their road game was one to remember for their devoted fans.
With the victory, Pirates tie second-place Stellenbosch FC on 46 points, moving up to 43 points in third position.
With 56 points and three games remaining against Stellenbosch and Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns are still miles ahead of their opponents.
controversial beginning
Even though the game started slowly, it picked up steam when Pirates were given a controversial penalty around the halfway point. The referee pointed to the spot, and Patrick Maswanganyi stepped up and converted to put the team ahead even though TV replays showed the foul was outside the box.
In the 56th minute, Pirates’ advantage was increased by Thalente Mbatha, who scored a goal with ease after running onto a brilliant through-ball from Maswanganyi in the box.
In the 74th minute, Relebohile Mofokeng scored his team’s third goal. He entered the box unopposed by defenders and found a spot to shoot past the helpless Mondli Mpoto of Royal AM.
In less than ten minutes, Kabelo Dlamini attempted to cross the ball into the box, but as he looked up, it had unintentionally lobbed into the upper corner of the Royal AM goal, capping an incredible day for Orlando Pirates.
