Los Angeles Chargers Sign Third-Round Pick DT Jamaree Caldwell to Rookie Contract

Los Angeles, CA — The Los Angeles Chargers have officially signed defensive tackle Jamaree Caldwell to his rookie contract, securing their third-round pick from the 2025 NFL Draft. Caldwell, selected with the No. 86 overall pick, is expected to bolster the Chargers’ defensive line with his unique blend of size and agility.

A Versatile Defensive Force

Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 332 pounds, Caldwell brings a rare combination of power and quickness to the defensive tackle position. Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz praised Caldwell’s ability to “strike with his hands” and his “foot quickness,” noting that he “does a really good job of playing square and physical.”

During his collegiate career, Caldwell showcased his versatility. At the University of Houston, he excelled as a three-technique defensive tackle, recording 6.5 sacks in 2023. After transferring to Oregon, he adapted to a nose tackle role, starting all 14 games in 2024 and contributing 29 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, and three pass breakups.

Chargers’ Defensive Line Outlook

Caldwell’s addition comes at a crucial time for the Chargers’ defense. With the departure of key players like EDGE rusher Joey Bosa and defensive end Morgan Fox, the team has focused on strengthening their defensive front. Caldwell, alongside EDGE rusher Kyle Kennard, is expected to play a pivotal role in the team’s defensive schemes.

The Chargers’ defense, which ranked in the middle of the pack in opposing rushing yards allowed per game last season, aims to improve its run-stopping capabilities. Caldwell’s presence should help collapse the pocket and free up edge rushers to pressure quarterbacks more effectively.

Looking Ahead

As Caldwell prepares to join the Chargers for the upcoming season, fans and analysts alike are eager to see how his skills translate to the NFL. With his blend of size, agility, and versatility, Caldwell has the potential to become a cornerstone of the Chargers’ defensive line for years to come.
