Mercedes Russell, a two-time WNBA champion and former standout at the University of Tennessee, has officially committed to the Texas Longhorns women’s basketball team. This marks a significant addition to head coach Vic Schaefer’s roster as the team prepares for its upcoming season.

Russell’s collegiate career at Tennessee was distinguished by numerous accolades. She became just the sixth Lady Vol to achieve 1,000 career rebounds and scored over 1,500 points, joining the ranks of notable players like Candice Parker and Chamique Holdsclaw. Her tenure included multiple double-doubles and recognition on the All-SEC First Team and AP All-SEC Second Team.

Following her college career, Russell was drafted by the New York Liberty in the second round of the 2018 WNBA Draft. She later joined the Seattle Storm, contributing to two WNBA championships. In 2025, she signed with the Los Angeles Sparks, bringing her championship experience and leadership to the team.

Russell’s decision to join Texas adds a seasoned veteran to the Longhorns’ lineup, providing valuable experience and depth as they aim to compete at the highest levels in women’s college basketball.
