Amari Cooper Signing With the New Orleans Saints

With the 2025 NFL Draft having ended over a week ago now, the New Orleans Saints walked away with arguably one of the worst drafts that doesn’t help the team out fully for this upcoming season. For the Saints, they must now turn their attention back to NFL Free Agency to ensure they fill the rest of their roster out correctly before the start of the preseason.

One of the positions they must address is the wide receiver spot, as they can’t feel confident relying on just Chris Olave as the primary target for whoever they have under center, whether that is Derek Carr, Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler, or Jake Haener.

That is why the New Orleans Saints will look to sign Amari Cooper.

New Orleans Saints Sign Amari Cooper
Amari Cooper currently remains a free agent, and one of the top wide receivers left along with Keenan Allen. With Cooper, he is coming off a “down” season in which he posted just 588 yards and four touchdowns over 50 receptions. This was due to him being on the Cleveland Browns to begin the season, a team in which the offense was dysfunctional, and then traded to the Buffalo Bills where he had to learn a new scheme. Cooper was never able to hit his stride, but just in 2023, he was able to accumulate 1,309 yards and five touchdowns over 76 receptions. Amari Cooper is still a top wide receiver, he just needs the right opportunity to showcase this.

By signing with the New Orleans Saints, they would get a wide receiver that is big-bodied to help in contested catch situations, while also having a large catch radius. If the Saints decide to go with Tyler Shough under center, Cooper would help him adjust to the NFL level by being a reliable go-to wide receiver. Cooper also has plenty of experience, as he has been in the NFL for 10 seasons, generating 10,379 yards and 66 touchdowns over that span.

Pairing that type of experience up with the younger receivers that the Saints have would help with the development of the room, while also being a receiver that can take all the attention off Olave.

The biggest thing with this signing is the connection that Amari Cooper already has with the new head coach, Kellen Moore. From 2019- 2021 when Cooper had spent full seasons on the Dallas Cowboys, it was Kellen Moore who was his offensive coordinator. Over those three seasons, Amari Cooper had 3,232 yards and 22 touchdowns during that span, with back-to-back seasons even having over 1,100 yards.

Kellen Moore already knowing Amari Cooper helps get this signing done, and would greatly benefit the Saints as Cooepr would already know how to operate in Moore’s scheme while Moore knows how to get the best out of Cooper. While Cooper is going to be 31 by the start of the season, he is still a valuable player and can greatly help the Saints offense at the wide receiver position.
