Surprised,” Broome said of Donaldson’s departure. “We are going into this offseason knowing that there are spots to fill in the portal and then [center] Vlad[islav Goldin] is gone, [forward/center] Danny Wolf is likely gone. And you’re looking for things to kinda sink your teeth into like, alright, what is the foundation of this team that was set this year? I thought Tre Donaldson would be one of those pieces, and with the amount of guards that Dusty likes to play, the amount of [guards] at a given time that he plays that can handle the basketball, I thought with Cadeau there was room for him here.

“I think that Tre as a combo guard masquerading as a point guard … I think that it’s getting less and less this way now with basketball, but I think point guard — starting point guard — for a lot of guys still carries weight. It’s like starting quarterback; it’s like you are the man, and you’re the engine that makes the offense run.

“In a lot of ways, he was the engine that made this Michigan team run. On the nights that he didn’t play well, they didn’t look very good. And on the nights that he did, it looked like they could’ve beaten just about anyone that they went up against.”
