Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has made the difficult decision to part ways with head coach Mick Byrne following the team’s underwhelming performance at the recent Rugby World Cup.
The decision comes after a series of disappointing results, including a narrow loss to Portugal and a heavy defeat to France. Despite showing flashes of brilliance, the Fijian side struggled to maintain consistency and ultimately failed to reach the knockout stages.
FRU CEO, John O’Connor, expressed his disappointment with the team’s performance and acknowledged the need for change. “We had high hopes for this World Cup campaign, and it’s clear that we didn’t meet those expectations. While we value Mick’s contribution to Fijian rugby, we believe a change in leadership is necessary to revitalize the team and set us on the right path for future competitions.”
The FRU is expected to announce an interim coach in the coming days and will begin the process of identifying a long-term replacement for Byrne.
